Dr. Gibson stroked the puppy and nodded. “Good. I’ll call you in the morning. You can see him tomorrow. Hopefully he’ll make it through the night.”

“What?” David stared at her.

Charles stared at the vet, too. “Hopefully he’ll make it?” he asked. A bad taste came into his mouth. Was he going to throw up? He clenched his fists so hard that his fingernails dug into his palms. “What do you mean, hopefully he’ll make it?”

Dr. Gibson’s face softened. “He’s a very sick puppy.” Her voice was gentler now. “I promise to do every single thing I can to make him well. But — I can’t promise that it will work.”
